One of the most regrettable outcomes of the pandemic has been the impact on education, when access to learning institutions became restricted. So it was highly appropriate that the third International Day of Education – designated by the UN at the start of this week – embraced the theme: Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation'.  

As part of the initiatives for this occasion, the international body solicited commitments “to protect education financing and...safeguard” investments in skills development, among other goals. This is an important consideration because, at a time when certain governments and companies are facing challenging financial circumstances, they may be tempted to cut skilling and reskilling programs.  

Such thinking would run counter to the long-term success of the global workforce. The digital skills gap is widening around the world, and now more than ever we must remain steadfast to nurturing skills-building and education. As Audrey Azoulay, the UNESCO Director General, points out: education is “the most powerful aid to development that we have.”
