In this role, the individual is responsible for conducting a variety of test procedures in the laboratory, adhering to established standards with minimal direct supervision. Tasks include routine sample processing, such as spinning and aliquoting patient samples, performing qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses, and carrying out haematology and blood bank procedures. The individual is also responsible for following laboratory policies related to registration, billing, identification, and record-keeping, ensuring all processes align with established protocols.
The individual must comply with all applicable safety regulations within the laboratory and is tasked with maintaining proper inventory levels of consumables and reagents, reporting low supplies to senior staff. Daily quality control (QC) results are reviewed, and any issues are discussed with senior staff. The individual also monitors the performance of laboratory instruments and equipment, promptly reporting any malfunctions to ensure smooth operations.
Additionally, the role involves participation in regulatory compliance, including proficiency testing programs and hospital quality assurance initiatives. The individual is expected to engage in routine maintenance of instruments and pursue ongoing professional development through continuing education. Flexibility in staffing and participation in shift duties are required, along with performing any additional tasks as assigned by the clinical supervisor.
skills and experience required
Candidates for this role should possess a recognized Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent, along with a certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology or a Polytechnic Diploma, or their equivalents. Prior experience in a clinical laboratory setting is considered advantageous, providing a solid foundation for the responsibilities of the position.
The role requires flexibility, including the ability to work on weekends or public holidays when needed. Quick learning abilities and adaptability are crucial, as well as leadership skills to effectively supervise, guide, and train subordinates. The ideal candidate should be confident, resilient, and results-oriented, with a strong team-oriented mindset.
