Job Purpose
This Financial Accountant role plays an integral part of the Financial Accounting team in performing a number of core functions pertaining to financial accounting, at South East Water. The key functions of the Financial Accounting team, include managing transactional banking and treasury operations, reporting on financials to external stakeholders and statutory compliance, providing expertise advice on technical accounting matters, and ensuring the integrity of general ledger and fixed asset register.

Key Accountabilites
The Financial Accountant is responsible for the following:
Technical accounting advice and support:
- Providing non-complex technical advice on accounting and tax matters to the finance team and the business.
- Interpreting and making recommendations in relation to accounting principles and standards that are well researched with assumptions and judgements clearly documented.
- Proactively keeping abreast of current and emerging accounting tax issues, including accounting standards and legislative amendments.
Statutory reporting:
- Assisting with the preparation of the Year-End financial report and performance report of South East Water to ensure disclosures are in line with best practice.
- Preparing the Year-End financial report of South East Water’s subsidiary, Iota, to ensure disclosures are in line with best practice.
- Preparing submissions of financial reporting requirements to Government, including actual and budget financial results to DTF and annual report and corporate plan data to DEECA, and quarterly financial data to ABS, timely and accurately.
- Preparing tax and other statutory reporting obligations timely and accurately.
- Assisting with internal and external audits.
Transactional accounting and operations:
- Performing advanced accounting activities associated with fixed assets to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the Fixed Asset Register. This includes acquisition, capitalization, disposal, impairment, revaluation, depreciation, capital work-in-progress and stock-take.
- Performing accounting activities associated with developer income, which includes timely accounting, recognition and ongoing monitoring of developer assets and its associated revenue recognition.
- Performing accounting activities associated with leases and other ad-hoc balances, where required.
- Performing month end balance paper reconciliations to ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial data and proactively investigating variances.
- Building strong working relationships with Finance Business Partners and other business groups to ensure consistent high quality accounting and finance practices.
General Reporting and Controls:
- Assisting with monitoring the financial data and records are in compliance with accounting policies and procedures, including monitoring transactions within the business.
- Assisting with developing and updating accounting policies and procedural documentation within the Financial Accounting team’s function.
- Assisting with monitoring the internal controls are in line with policies, statutory requirements and accounting standards.
- Working closely with the Systems team to support the adequacy of system based controls for financial accounting and reporting requirements.
- Performing ad-hoc financial analysis to make recommendations to management.
- Proactively identifying improvement opportunities to process and practices within the Financial Accounting team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Strong knowledge and understanding of technical accounting and tax concepts, principles and standards.
- High proficiency in the use of Finance ERP systems and databases.
- Proven experience in preparing statutory and business reporting requirements.
- Strong problem solving and ability to seek process improvements
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills to work collaboratively and maintain robust relationships.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to inform internal and external stakeholders
- A Tertiary Business or Finance or Accounting qualification, with at least 4+ years of financial accounting experience.
- CPA or CA qualification.
